September 28, 2024
“Everywhere he goes he stirs up hate against immigrants,” begins this political advertisement from the Lincoln Project on JD Vance, Donald Trump’s vice presidential running mate. “Who is he married to? A daugher of immigrants,” the ad continues referring to Vance’s wife, Usha Chilukuri Vance, whose parents immigrated to the United States from Andhra Pradesh, India.
The Lincoln Project, a political action committee, “is dedicated to the preservation, protection, and defense of democracy,” its website states. Its goal “is to hold accountable those who would violate their oaths to the Constitution and would place their loyalty to others before their loyalty to the American people and democracy.”
“Since our launch in December 2019, The Lincoln Project has played a unique role in American politics,” the website states. “We entered the political arena with two stated objectives: first, to defeat Donald Trump at the ballot box in 2020. (Done.) The second was to ensure Trumpism failed alongside him. We understand that the real fight against Trumpism is just beginning and we’re committed to seeing it through. Our democracy depends on it.”
Lincoln Project was co-founded by Rick Wilson, a 30-year veteran of national Republican politics. He got his start in the 1988 Presidential campaign of George Herbert Walker Bush, who went on to win the election.
While founded by former Republican strategists, the Lincoln Project site notes that the “team has expanded to include individuals from across the political spectrum. We are first and foremost: pro-democracy.” In the 2020 election, the group raised $87 million for its campaign, according to Open Secrets.
Trump-Vance team is against “illegal” immigrants. Vance’s wife is a descendant of “legal” immigrants. What is the disconnect that Lincoln Project is pointing to?
